Glyphosate in our Bread

According to a campaign run by the Soil Association: 'Not in Our Bread', Glyphosate—the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup (the most widely sold weedkiller in the world) "can follow the grain into our food."

In an article on their website here, they state the following: 

"Government figures show its use in UK farming has increased by a shocking 400% in the last 20 years. Nearly a third of UK cereal crops were sprayed with glyphosate in 2013.

In addition to its use as a normal weedkiller, its manufacturers advise farmers to spray their wheat with glyphosate to kill and dry the crop, making it easier to harvest.

But glyphosate can follow the grain into our food. Tests by the Defra Committee on Pesticide Residues in Food (PRiF) found that as much as 30% of UK bread contained glyphosate.

Glyphosate’s manufacturers insist the levels in our food are safe. But a report by the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer has concluded that glyphosate is a ‘probable carcinogen’. And research published since the IARC report suggests there is no safe level of glyphosate in food.

We need to get this weedkiller out of our bread, and out of our bodies.

Using glyphosate, and glyphosate-based products, as a pre-harvest treatment is fundamentally wrong, and we are calling for an end to it. "

So why is this article in the Nooma blog? We are deeply concerned about all residual pesticides that come into contact with our bodies - whether in contact with our skin through cosmetic ingredients or directly through our food! 

We therefore wanted to add our support to the campaign to raise awareness that staple foods like cereals may contain levels of pesticides which may be of concern to those of us attempting to reduce our exposure to toxic chemicals in all aspects of our lives.

If possible, seek out sources of organic bread - or perhaps make some! Maybe you have a bread machine that you haven't put to good use in a while?

We thought that this blog thread might be a fun way of sharing some organic recipes.

We will offer our own family bread machine recipe as a start:


Organic Seeded Whole wheat / White Seeded: A very nourishing, tasty bread! 

(Vegan recipe) 


Add these ingredients to the bread maker in this order:

  1. Sprinkle 1 level teaspoon of dried organic yeast powder to the bottom of bread maker.
  2. 1lb 2oz of bread flour - we use a variety of mixes but love the following one:
    • 8oz of Organic 3 seeded / malted wholewheat + 10oz Organic white 6 seeded (total 1lb 2oz)
    • (for organic yeast and many great quality certified organic flours look up Shipton Mill).
  3. Grind 1 level teaspoon of Pink Himalayan Rock Salt and sprinkle on (or any salt)
  4. 1 level teaspoon of organic black strap molasses (include in every loaf to boost your iron levels a little each day! Will darken and slightly flavour bread so perhaps not best for a white loaf!)
    • (or 1 teaspoon Organic Rapadura sugar or any organic sugar)
    • (or 1 teaspoon organic raw honey - for non-Vegans - this is lovely if using mainly white seeded flour)
  5. 1 tablespoon of organic extra virgin, cold pressed olive oil
    • (or any organic cold pressed vegetable oil - please not refined or hydrogenated!)
  6. 10 fluid oz of cold water.

     Bread maker settings: X large loaf; select whole-wheat : bake for 5 hours.

Put it on the timer before going bed, so that you wake up to the fresh smell of your own organic bread! One loaf provides four of us with sandwiches each day plus a couple of extra slices. 

* You can also add mixed organic dried fruit and / or walnuts with cinnamon to the seed tray for a delicious wholesome fruit loaf.
