From Nooma Organics to The Severn Weigh?
Towards the end of September 2017, I made the incredibly difficult decision to take a break from my skincare manufacture of Nooma Organics in order to rethink the direction of the business. I was then faced with an awful quandary - if I took time out from the business, then the organic certification with the soil association, that I had worked so hard to achieve, would also need to come to an abrupt end rather than to simply pause.

Vanilla Planifolia
The vanilla trade has hit yet another crisis with exorbitant prices soaring rapidly out of control. In earlier years, 2002 - 2004, this boom was followed by crashing prices, but in 2016 prices remained unfeasibly high with no clear sign of falling as hoped.

Glyphosate in our Bread
According to a campaign run by the Soil Association: 'Not In our Bread', Glyphosate—the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup (most widely sold weedkiller in the world) "can follow the grain into our food."

Simply Label Appeal? Part 3. Organic?
Brandished across many food and cosmetics labels is the oh-so familiar word ‘Organic’ - but what does it actually mean? ... From the perspective of Organic Farming, however, the definition of ‘Organic’ has a very different meaning, referring to farming practices that are rooted in holistic philosophy:“…organic farmers take a holistic, principled approach that respects and harnesses the power of natural processes to build positive health a

Simply 'Label Appeal'? Part 2. Natural & Raw
The meaning of the words ‘natural’ and ‘raw’ might appear to be explicit but these terms have no legal, regulated definition on Cosmetics' labels.Products labelled as 'natural' vary enormously: from those comprised of nutrient rich, simply processed ingredients to others containing some rather dubious synthetic or chemically processed derivatives. So called 'Natural Ingredients', whilst perhaps derived from natural sources, may have subs

Organic Nutritional Differences
The Soil Association has drawn attention to an important new study led by Newcastle University which was recently published (16 February 2016) in the British Journal of Nutrition. The team analysed data from around the world, reviewing 196 papers on milk and 67 on meat "and found clear differences between organic and conventional milk and meat, especially in terms of fatty acid composition, and the concentrations of certain essential minerals and

Raw Organic Honey
There is a world of difference between raw, organic mono-floral honey and conventional pasteurised honey - the latter, often comprising a blend of various honeys, sometimes with sugar, flavourings and other additives, which is also heat treated and filtered. Artisan honey, by contrast, is usually pure, fresh and unpasteurised; a nutritious ‘live’ prebiotic food often said to boost the immune system, retaining enzymes, vitamins, minerals and

Waxes and Pesticides on Citrus Peels
Lemons contain an abundance of Vitamin C, flavonoids, B vitamins, calcium, potassium and other minerals whilst the peel is said to contain a far greater proportion of these antioxidants. Eating lemons, and the peel in particular, whether added to food or made into a beverage is clearly beneficial to the body - yet, conventionally grown lemons, and other citrus fruits, are sprayed with many herbicides and insecticides which can leach into the skin

 Simply 'Label Appeal'? Part 1.
At Nooma Organics, we are hugely disenchanted by the widespread ‘greenwashing’ of conventional skincare products: an extensive and misleading use of the terms 'natural' and 'organic' applied to products which scarcely meet the mark; intended to create ‘label appeal’ rather than identify genuine skin nourishing formulas. These terms have become so ‘common or garden’ that they have lost their potency; perhaps have become relatively meaningless...
