Organic Chia Seeds

Chia Seeds are from Salvia Hispanica; an annual plant which is a flowering species of the mint family (Lamiaceae) and native to central and southern Mexico and Guatemala.

Chia are tiny oval shaped seeds ranging in colour from dark brown, grey to white with a mild nutty flavour and a firm crunchy texture, similar to poppy seeds.

Chia seeds have been dubbed as a 'superfood' due to their very high nutritional value. They are believed to be one of the most-concentrated sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid whilst also a rich source of the B vitamins, antioxidants and minerals: calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, and zinc.

Unlike flax seeds, which need to be ground to fully benefit from their nutrients, chia seeds are easily digested and can be eaten whole. 

Similar to flax seeds, however, Chia seeds also make a great vegan egg replacement! When Chia seeds are soaked, they absorb liquid and become very soft forming a gel-like consistency with a similar appearance to tapioca pudding. As an egg replacement, soak seeds at a ratio of 1:6 in water. One tablespoon of gel is equal to one egg.

This gel can also be used as a substitute for pectin when making jam. 

Some people like to soak chai into juice or yoghurt to make 'chia pudding'. It is a useful vegan setting agent for creamy mousse type puddings. 

Chia seeds can be added to protein bars, sprinkled over salads, added to pancakes or smoothies! Just remember, that if you put them into liquid, they transform into the gel!

Storage:

It is best to store chia seeds in a dry, airtight container away from sources of heat, light and moisture in order to keep them fresh and help retain nutrients. They have a good shelf life but this can also be extended in a refrigerator (keep dry).
